I often wonder, why and when do adults start fearing to do things they were never scared of as a child? When do we become so careful, so cautious? When you were a child were you scared to fall on the ground? I guess that the floor was your best friend, and you spent most of your time rolling on it,jumping and falling down! Am I right? You weren’t scared to hang upside down from the bar in front of the house. You weren’t afraid to do flips on the trampoline! You weren’t afraid of climbing on dry trees! As a whole you used to take risks and enjoy every minute of it!
Why are you scared now? I often have a hard time convincing people to try new exercises in the gym! Most people complain their workouts are boring and similar. The problem is that you could do a bunch of fun stuff in the gym, if you weren’t scared to try them! When I dare to ask somebody to work on some handstand progressions, I get the perplexed look, the big, scared eyes, staring at me, screamin “No way I am doing it!” Come on! What is it that scares you so much, to stay with your legs in the air? When I was a child I remember, jumping in the front yard, doing handstands and flips. I never gave it much thought. I never overanalyzed the situation, and I never thought about the negative consequences that could follow! That’s why I never attracted negativity and I only got the positives from it- I just had a blast doing it!
The same thing happens when I mention rope climbing! People start shaking their head, and step back! Calm down! I know that when you hear rope climbing, your first thought is falling on the ground from a big hight! But shouldn’t be that way! Remember when you were a kid? You were never afraid to climb a tree! How many times did you fall? I guess none! Or even if you fell down, it didn’t hurt that bad!
Another thing I notice, is people afraid of jumping! Especially if they had a previous knee or ankle injury! It takes a lot of convincing, to make them give jumping a shot. I usually stay on the other side and hold people for the arms, so they could dare to jump, without being afraid of falling! Truth is that you fear is making things complicated and your fear is the one that might lead to injury! If you believe in yourself and your ability to jump, you won’t have a problem doing it! But if you fear tripping or falling, you doubt your abilities! When you jump and you find yourself in the air, doubting if you are gonna complete the jump, your chances of an injury are pretty big!
I love jumping higher and higher every time. I often challenge myself by adding one more plate on the pile and jumping. Do you know how many times I’ve hit my shins trying to jump? I can’t even count them! So what? You hit yourself and then keep going more carefully! Failures shouldn’t stop your progress!
There is a 40 year old guy in the gym, who jumps at 1metre and 20cm!!! The other day he added one more plate, and when he jumped he fell on his back? Did he quit? No, he got up, he laughed over it and tried again!
The thing is that, by getting older we start overanalyzing situations! We rarely search for the postive outcome, but more likely see the negativity! Change that! Be a child! Enjoy every minute of it! Dare to try new things, new exercises and you will love your workouts! You will never get bored, and you will have a blast!
