The other day I was arguing with a person I really love, but a person that has exactly the opposite opinion when it comes to training! He was claiming that if a person wants to lose weight, he/she can’t achieve it with heavy weights and that he/she has to do aerobic exercises.( right there I sneezed) Not that I was sick, I am just allergic to that statement! 😉
That is why today I decided to write a response to him and everybody else that thinks this way, proving you, why YOU CAN LOSE WEIGHT with heavy weights and it is even MORE EFFECTIVE!
In order to lose weight, you need to be in some kind of a caloric deficit, i.e. the calories in should be less than the calories out. What does it mean to lose weight? For most people, the main indicator is the scale. If it shows a lower number, that means that everything is moving in the right direction. But is that really true? What the scale doesn’t show is if you are burning fat or muscles. There are obvious examples, with women and men, who weight the same, but some are skinny fat and the others are fit, tight and athletic.
Truth is that the more muscles you have, the more calories you are gonna burn. Besides that weight training, engaging big muscle groups, leads to a better hormonal response- the body releases hormones that aid in lowering body fat percentage. That is why, if you wanna lose FAT and not muscles, you need to work out and eat in a way that will promote it!
And what could be better than lifting weights?
Now you are gonna say < Yes, but aerobic exercises burn more calories, than anaerobic!”
This could be true, just in case you compare the calories you burn during the workout itself, but the real truth is a lot more different, if we take a look at the big picture!
Aerobic exercises help you burn calories, while you are performing them, and anaerobic exercises help you to keep on burning calories even in the hours and days after the workout. This has to show you that if you sum up all the calories you burned during an anaerobic activity and the calories burned after that, they will be a lot more, than those burned with aerobic exercises!
As you know, the positives aren’t always obvious. Workouts involving weight training, help for the change of the endocrine response( i.e. the hormones that are released in your body). There are a bunch of researches, that show how weight training provokes the release of hormones, which aid in making your metabolism faster, improve your digestion, and your mood.
Another reason behind weight training being so effective is the fact that you don’t get adapted to it, as you could become adapted to aerobic exercises. What does that mean?
I am sure that most of you have heard how if you keep on running 3 miles every day, after some time, your body will become adapted to it and it will start burning less calories, for the same activity!
Well, that can’t happen with intense, weight training sessions! The stronger you become, the heavier weights you will lift and your body won’t be able to adapt to it! Thus your workouts will always be more effective!
And one more thing that pops up in my mind. Every day I see women, running in the park, hoping they will get tighter butt and legs. And have you ever asked yourself if that can be achieved this way? First of all, the way they run does not activate their glutes, because they are mostly dragging their legs and not flexing them! Besides that in order to make your body tighter, you need to build some muscles. And in order to build muscles, you need to work out in a way that involves some kind of resistance. Whether it’d be body weight or another weight, there must be some kind of resistance!
So if you really want to have tight and athletic body, not aerobic, but anaerobic exercises are the way to achieve it! Go in the gym and get busy lifting weights!
Personally I have lost 8 inches off my waist, since I started lifting HEAVY weights! If that isn’t fat loss, I do not know what is!
Here are some real life examples, how you could be the same weight, but look totally different and a lot better when you train with weights!
What is your opinion?Do you think that you could lose fat, lifting heavy weights?
