As you already know, I really LOVE reading! Every week I read at least 1-2 books, I follow about 15-20 blogs daily and I read even more…
Unlike most people, I don’t like reading just the books and articles that back up my opinion. Sometimes I really love reading stuff that are contrary to my beliefs. I’ve found out that this challenges my mind, my creativity and my desire to find a logical answer to why such a controversy exists and where is the truth.
You know what I am talking about… something like relationships. If somebody nods in agreement every time you say something, at the beginning you might like it but sooner or later you will get tired of it and you are gonna wish for the other person to has his own opinion, so you could have a nice, worthy conversation, no matter if you have opposite opinions!
In the fitness industry, people constantly argue what is right or wrong. What is the best training method, which nutrition plan is the most effective or healthy. There are a ton of different points of view. Like everybody else I also have my own opinion, which is the result of a lot of reading and a solid experience, BUT the truth is that there are other different methods than mine, which also lead to results! According to my beliefs, it might not be the optimal solution, but there are OBVIOUS proofs that they work!
That is why today I decided to leave my “teaching voice” aside and share with you a couple principles, that you should always follow no matter the training method you chose for yourself!
Because even the best workout, won’t help you achieve your goals, if you don’t follow the principles below:
1.Consistency
That is important not just for your workouts and nutrition, but for everything else you do in life. No matter what you do, you should be consistent! You should take decisions and then do what you need to do, in order to abide by your choice and never let yourself change the direction every single day. If you do so, you will be just wandering and you will never arrive anywhere!
What does that mean?
It means that not every wonder should last three days. If you could stick to something long enough, probably today you would have reached a lot more goals! If for the last couple years, you took out one unhealthy food each month, today you could have a really healthy diet! The same is true for your workouts!
2.Do the optimal best in each moment
Yes! The OPTIMAL! That means, that you don’t need to be perfect all the time. If today you are not feeling good, don’t skip your workout! Go to the gym and do something that will be the optimal best thing, for your condition on that given day. Even if you can’t work out, go and take a walk! You will still do something more, than sit in front of the TV, eating junk!
Always choose what will do the least harm to your progress!
3.Recovery
I bet that there isn’t a person who hasn’t over trained. You know how it feels, what injuries could come with it and how much time it takes to recover. Recovery is the foundation of every training program! The better you feel, the better your workouts will be and the more progress you will see!
4.Know why you work out and why you do a particular exercise
Don’t aimlessly go to the gym… just to spend energy! Know why you do every single exercise. Which muscles it loads and why you need to do it! Is it gonna help you with some muscle imbalances, is it gonna help you improve your posture, improve your gait or something else? Just make sure that you do not perform exercises chaotically! Don’t just do what you like! Do what you need!
5. Progressive loading
Don’t do stuff that are too hard for your physical form. Progress SLOWLY ENOUGH, so you won’t injure yourself! First learn the basics and then build on them!
6.Have an individual approach
You’ve heard this a billion times but it is so true! Just because Jordan is doing exactly these exercises, doesn’t mean that you also need to do them! Let your workout program, be build on the foundation of your weaknesses and strengths. Let your program be such, that it will help you do the best for YOUR body!
7. Variety
Don’t get me wrong! Variety doesn’t mean that you should do something fancy. Variety means that you should change intensity, weights( ropes, medicine balls, kettlebells, tires), environment( the gym, the park, the stadium) and so forth. Most people’s daily life is really monotonous and that kills life and the pleasure of living it. Try bringing some variety not only in your workouts but also in your life. You will see how you could aim at one goal, and without ever deviating from it, you could constantly do something different!
8. Nutrition
I am constantly repeating how nutrition is something really important! It contributes to the quality of your life and the improvement of your health. In order to work out you should be healthy. In order to be healthy you should eat real, nutritious, quality food!
What are the principles that you think should be the foundation of a successful training program?
