A problem that almost every trainee encounters is the muscle imbalance. I’ve said it before, but muscle imbalances can cause a lot of pain and injuries.

More often than not, depending on our lifestyle, job and daily activities, one side of our body, becomes stronger than the other. I bet that most of you, who use mainly their right hand, find out that their left hand is a lot weaker. The same is true for your legs.

For this kind of imbalance, a big contributor could be the sport you play. For example, when I used to play basketball, my left leg was a lot stronger than my right leg, because I used to drive through the right side of the court and respectively I jumped mainly off my left foot.

You are probably wondering how that even matters. Who cares that one of my arms or legs are stronger than the other one… The problem comes from the fact that in your body each muscle has a particular function. When a given muscle is weaker and doesn’t function properly, the body in the role of a smart machine, compensates by building a different mechanical path of movement, thus forcing the stronger muscles to work more, compared to the weak once.

This leads to a bad posture, pain, tight muscles and injuries. Usually the stronger muscles, work more, so they could compensate the inactivity of weak muscles, and so they become tighter, which really causes a lot of pain. Respectively the weak muscles, loosen more.

I love reading T-nation. This website is something like the “Holy Bible” to me, in terms of workouts and nutrition! Yesterday, while I was going through Ben Bruno’s Good Reads , I stumbled over this article “5 Mistakes That Killed My Progress”. This made me think about the mistakes that I’ve made in my past- the once that killed my progress!

1. Not following a structured workout program and just doing the exercises I like

This is one of the biggest mistakes I’ve made! When I started lifting weights, at the beginning I had progress, probably because until then I have never touched a weight in my entire life!

And after all , it is normal to have quick progress, when you are new at something. But not long after that, there came a moment, when I was just treading on one place. And not because I wasn’t making enough effort or because I was cheating. Actually, I always give my best, at times it even looks like pure masochism. Te problem was that back then, I still didn’t have the knowledge to structure my own training program. Every morning I woke up with a big desire to work out, but just for the sake of working out!

I had big dreams of being able to do pull ups, push- ups, walk on hands, squat with heavy weights… but a dream is just a dream, until you take the particular actions, that will turn your dream into a goal!

Working out without a clearly, defined program, I just went to practice and I did the exercises I liked… push-ups? Absurd! Back then I told myself “I can’t do push-ups and today I am not feeling good, so I better do something I am good at!”

Handstands? Have you lost your mind? You have shoulder injuries and you could fall and injure yourself!

Bulgarian squats? No way! I’d rather flip some tires!

And thus the time went by… I was wasting my efforts and I never seemed to progress! Until the day, I (more…)

More often than not, people go to the gym and work out, doing a variety of exercises, without actually being aware why they are doing them. They rarely give it a thought, how the exercises they are doing, could improve their posture, reduce the muscle imbalances or just help them improve their athletic level.

What usually happens is that a person decides he is going to work out. He opens a fitness magazine or a fitness website. He copies a training program that somebody else is doing and then works out in exactly the same manner!

This is a sure way to never achieve your goal and even a more sure way to waste your time!

Today I will emphasize on why it is important to perform exercises, which will strengthen your core, what are the benefits from these exercises and I will suggest you some variety!
