Just kidding… 😉

At times I really wanna think that more people realize the fact that women and lifting weights aren’t two incompatible things. I am fooling myself that this is happening, whenever I spend too much time with people who have been working out for years, people who have achieved great results- the results that everybody dreams to have, but rarely somebody works hard enough to achieve!

The last week, I had to spend more time with people, who reminded me that even though there is a light at the end of the tunnel, most still have wrong understanding about women and weights! I remembered lines like “ You look really good, but if you keep on lifting these weights you will get bulky”; “Lifting weights is bad for women”; “ Women who lift weights aren’t attractive” and so on.

For those of you, who compliment a woman who lifts weights and after that you warn her, how if she keeps on lifting weights, she will get bulky, let me tell you something! How do you think that she got in this shape? If you see a woman who is not afraid to put plates on the bar, but when she goes out of the gym everybody’s staring at her, admiring her fit, defined body… have you ever thought that this body is the product of lifting heavy weights?

I know that most of you really love numbers, as a way to prove something. Well, if you really insist on knowing, I am not scared that if I keep on lifting, I will get big and bulky, because the heavier the weights on the bar are, the smaller the size of my thighs and belly become! Since I started lifting weights, my thighs are 3,5 inches smaller and my hips are 8 inches smaller! And yes! I know it looks weird, but it is the mere truth!

And to those of you  thinking, “ You were probably too overweight and not physically active, so it is absolutely normal to lose weight when you start moving more”, I will tell you that for the last 11-12 years, there isn’t a day that I haven’t worked out or been physically active. But the thing is that before I used to work out with the pink dumbbells, I spent countless hours in the cardio room and I was repeating like a parrot, that weights will make me big and bulky!

I used to admire bodies of sprinters, gymnasts, fitness models. I really wanted to have such a fit and curvy body. And whenever I asked them how they work out, I always heard the same answer “ I lift weights”. And I thought “ Oh, no! I don’t wanna become masculine. I just want to get fitter.” Back then, I was just like you. I never gave it a thought, that if I want to look like them and be as fit as they were, probably I was supposed to train and eat in a similar way. If they lifted weights and looked so fabulous, why didn’t I believe them, and instead trusted women’s magazines, where the articles were written by people, who have probably never set their foot in the gym?

I won’t bore you with scientific proofs, why weights won’t make you big and bulky. The only thing I want to tell you is that whenever somebody is giving you an advice about nutrition, working out or life as a whole, the first thing you should do is take a look at that person and ask yourself “ Do I wanna be like him/ her? Do his achievements, match my goals?”. If the answer is positive, then listen to him/her! But if the person, who is telling you that weights make women big and bulky, has spent the last couple years wandering in the gym; if she is wondering why her cellulite is still there, why her “bat wings” are still hanging and why her fat is jiggling, why would you believe her?

When they tell you that women shouldn’t be lifting weights, that it is bad for their health…give it a thought about the last time you picked up your child; the last time you went grocery shopping, and you carried the heavy bags upstairs. Or just remember about the heavy physical tasks that your great grandma had to perform on a daily basis. Remember that this woman has lifted heavy weights multiple times- in the yard, on the field… because her daily life demanded it and then remember that this did not interfere with her giving birth to 5-6 healthy children!

Take a look at women, whose bodies you admire. I am sure that most of them train with heavy weights and that a big percent of them ( who are elder) have kids and family. That means that weights helped them shape their body this way. Weights did not interfere with them giving birth to healthy children. And, oh my God! Can you imagine? They even weren’t that repulsive and they even managed to find a husband who found them attractive! 😉

And if you still insist on wasting a couple more years in the cardio room, exhausting yourself; if you still need a couple wasted years, no results and a sequence of disappointments, in order to realize that without lifting weights you can’t look the way you want… please don’t lift weights!

And just when you are so disappointed from your lack of progress, when you think that you don’t have the right genetics to be fit… remember that you have just one more opportunity before you quit- LIFTING WEIGHTS! 🙂 Then you will realize that I and everybody else who is telling you that weights do not make women big and bulky, have been right all along!

Here are some of the women I coach. They lift weights! Do they look big and bulky?

I´m just saying, add heavy biceps curls and french press or press-down to fill out the arms..3 sets x 10 reps And upright rows to round up the shoulders.Your emphasis is too much on the legs.
